"A Yosemite 100 miles long" -- John Muir

Cutting a deep, broad valley through the coastal mountain range that soars to 7000' above the river current, the Stickine River is an awe-inspiring sight.  Numerous glaciers still grace the river valley and are accessible from the main river -- on  most tours visitors will get close enough to actually touch these frozen rivers of ancient ice!

The Stikine/LeConte Wilderness Area is located just minutes from the dock, in Wrangell's "front yard." The day begins with a scenic traverse of the Stikine River flats.  The tidal flat area of the Stikine River provides a unique wildlife habitat for marine mammals hunting the shallows for salmon and herring and also serves as an important stop on the North American Flyway for numerous migratory waterfowl.   Once in the main river system guides will give several short informative talks on local history including the formation of the wilderness area, local people and the brief, exciting gold rush era of the late 1800's.

Several stops at points of interest may be made during the tour.  Visitors will enjoy the clear salmon-filled (in season) waters of Andrews Clearwater Creek and enjoy a "rest stop" under the canopy of towering cedar and spruce trees.  Numerous waterfalls cascade into the main stem of the Stikine River and provide photo opportunities -- perhaps we will see Moose, Sitka Blacktail Deer, Mountain Goat and/or Bear!   Your expert guides will discuss the phenomenon of glaciation as you glide between massive icebergs and boat up to the face of Shakes Glacier.  We will take another break for lunch on a gravel beach below a series of short waterfalls that originate high overhead in the ice cap.   After viewing the towering ice of Shakes Lake many visitors enjoy a stop at the natural hot springs.  Guests are welcome to enjoy the clear hot water springing out of the side of the mountain and filling several large cedar soaking tubs that are maintained by the USFS.   Our final stop will be the Garnet Ledge where visitors can "mine" their own unique Wrangell souvenir: a wine-colored semi-precious garnet gemstone.  Be sure to book early for a great day of adventure on the Stikine River!
